I never knew that Victoria’s Chinatown was the oldest in Canada…but the garbage can said so, so it must be true!  Actually there was an article in the paper when we were there about this very fact.  It was quite interesting as it was written by a woman of Chinese descent who was new to Victoria, so she had a unique perspective.  Basically, to sum up and do gross injustice to her literary skills, she said that although it’s a neat little part of Victoria, it is most definitely aimed at the tourists.  Other Chinatowns are towns unto themselves with more infrastructure such as banks etc, but many of the storefronts on Fisgard are cute little gift shops.  Don’t get me wrong…I love it there!  And, there’s some great vegetable/food markets to be enjoyed.
